Update from Kalamata: Request to retrieve the vessel, and to recover the bodies, by relatives of missing persons in Pylos shipwreck

Request to retrieve the vessel, and to recover the bodies, by relatives of missing persons in Pylos shipwreck.

The lawyers representing relatives of persons missing in the Pylos shipwreck, Ms Maria Papaminas (Greek Council for Refugees), Ms Eleni Spathana (Support for Refugees in the Aegean), and Mr Yiannis Kastanos, appeared before the Kalamata Prosecutor’s Office today (Thursday, July 6th, 2023) and submitted a request to raise the vessel from the seabed and recover the bodies. The lawyers asked for an order to locate and recover the fishing vessel, to locate, recover and retrieve the dead bodies for identification and subsequent burial purposes, and to take pictures and videos of the wreck for data preservation purposes. The written request was registered following an oral hearing with the Prosecutor.

During the same time, members of the city’s anti-fascist movement gathered outside the court house, holding placards with the following slogans in Greek and in English: “The dead and their families demand justice – Recover the bodies now”, “Solidarity will not drown”, “Mass grave off Pylos. We do not forget, does the Greek state?”, “European and Greek migration policies are killing people. No to Fortress Europe”.
